Personal Statement

My Name is Onnika DeBusk and I enjoy all the aspects of playing golf. I enjoy the challenges the sport brings from choosing the right club and the right swing, to developing a game plan to get my ball in the hole with as few strokes as possible. Working individually and working as a team member is also another aspect that golf provides that is important to me because I believe it is necessary to be able to work efficiently as an individual as-well-as a team member to be successful. I didn’t know I was going to fall in love with golf but when I was six-years-old I saw a book at the school library, “How to Play Golf”. I took the book home and told my mom I wanted to learn how to play the game of golf. I began golf lessons at six-years-old. For eight-years I would mostly golf with my dad and my golf pro during my weekly lessons. I am currently a freshman at Capital Christian High School and is a member of the Girls Varsity Golf Team, since the beginning of the golf season we have competed in few tournaments and several matches and I love the experience. In the short period of competing, I have seen significant changes in my golf game. Playing high school golf has taught me how to become a successful student athlete because it has helped me learn to prioritize and balance my academics, while still having quality time with my family and friends. Playing competitive golf have also taught me that continual practice, dedication, and hard work today will bring success tomorrow. My goal is to continue playing golf at a collegiate level. My academic goals for high school and college is to continue exceling in my studies and to maintain a high grade-point-average while playing golf at a competitive level. Although I’m just beginning my freshman year at high school, I am a very mature student athlete, as I have been balancing competitive sports and academics for the last four-years. I have been playing competitive club soccer and also is a member of the Northern California Olympic Development Soccer Program; which requires me to travel away from home and school for two to three days at a time. I am familiar and efficient in working within a scheduled timeframe to get my studies and practices completed. What sets me apart from other applicants is that I am focused at the task at hand and I recognized that obstacles, challenges, mistakes, etc., does not stop the game; however, success will be for sure if I can recognize what went wrong, put it away for future practices and continue to concentrate on the task ahead. Please give me an opportunity to show you what a positive and fulfilling addition I would be to your golf program.
