Making the decision to play field hockey in middle school has been one of the best decisions of my life. I’ve played soccer since I was four years old and knew I wanted to continue that in high school but also wanted to play a fall sport. At the encouragement of my mother, I attended a field hockey camp and fell in love. I continued playing field hockey at the club level throughout middle school and ultimately, my hard work and determination paid off when I was named a starter for the varsity field hockey team my freshman year.
We didn’t win a game that year, but I didn’t let that dampen my competitive spirit. My teammates and I persevered and were awarded the Northern Virginia Region Sportsmanship Award. I was honored to be recognized as an All-Conference Honorable Mention at the end of the season. My play that season also led to an invitation to try-out for a travel team. I was the only player from my high school invited to try-out. Walking into my first session not knowing a single person was pretty intimidating. Looking back, I’m so happy I made the decision to pursue the opportunity. I’ve made friends I never would have had, had I not stepped out of my comfort zone and challenged myself to try something new.
Of all my accomplishments, the thing I’m most proud of is maintaining my GPA while balancing a rigorous academic schedule, participating in my high school leadership program, and playing field hockey and soccer year round.
