I feel very fortunate as my parents have always provided for a balance of sports and academics in my life. I played a lot of hockey in my earlier years along with some soccer and baseball. I then moved my focus to volleyball in the fall of 2012. I’ve loved being part of all these sports and as the years go by, I’m realizing more and more that what one takes away from being involved in sports is much more than just playing a game. I’ve learned to have others count on me just as I count on them. I’ve learned that leadership comes in many shapes and sizes and often the best leadership is quite subtle and most often comes down to simply staying positive and supporting the team around me regardless of how things are going. I've come to learn that one of my best qualities is my ability to always show respect for and to get along with my coaches and my teammates. I’m also very serious about keeping my school grades high and so in my efforts to do so and given heavy sports schedules, it has made me budget and avoid wasting time.
I’ve played the middle position for quite a bit of my earlier volleyball days. That is what my teams needed and I was able to deliver. In that same time frame, I acted as the alternate setter and have more recently placed my primary focus on the setter position since I feel that is where I might better fit in at the college or university level. I’ve had very good success setting and am learning and getting better every outing. These are two of the more difficult volleyball positions to play and so I feel this has made me valuable to any future teams.
My Mom played college volleyball for a team in Wyoming starting in 1986 and my older sister was recently accepted to Washington State University on a rowing scholarship that started in 2014. This has given me a lot of insight into what it takes to make a difference and have a positive impact on an institution at the college or university level. I'm confident that this insight along with my work ethic, demonstrated volleyball skills and my ability to get along with people will make me successful and allow me to have an immediate and positive impact for any college or university that is willing to give me the opportunity. It would be a dream to continue to play volleyball while working towards a career in the areas of study I'm looking towards.
