As an upcoming sophomore at Gallia Academy High School in Gallipolis, Ohio, I am truly looking forward to assuming the role as the varsity setter. I have played volleyball since 3rd grade for a regional team that my mom coached for; I guess you could say we are a volleyball family considering my sister and I have both played from a young age and that our parents love to travel and watch us playing. Three years ago, I started playing at the Zenith Volleyball Academy in Columbus, Ohio. Since then, my family and I have travel 2 hours, one way to get to volleyball practice at least two times each week. During this time, I have continued to get straight A’s in my classes, to participate in service and social organizations in my community, and to improve my volleyball game and skills.
At the beginning of my high school career, the starting setter was injured, so I was able to take that position for the first half of the season, and I did very well. Once she returned, I took a leadership spot on the JV team. Both teams had very successful seasons. During this last club season, I was asked by Club Director and Coach to join the 16 Apex team, although I’m a 15. On this team, I have had the chance to run a 5-1, to set from the back row for a 6-2, and to set from the back row, while hitting outside or right side in the front. I have learned so much as a setter and player through the experiences I’ve had playing. I am a very smart and methodical player and am very conscientious of where I am placing the ball based on the opponent’s defense and position of their hitters. I have excellent hands, setting a very hittable ball, and I’m a very consistent and strategic server. My setter’s defense has improved the most though, particularly my “hands up” defense, which in many cases has become a natural response when a hard hit is directed in the setter’s area of the court.
Through my volleyball experiences, I have learned so many life lessons, including dedication, perseverance, patience, and commitment. I want to play volleyball on the collegiate level while studying to earn a bachelor’s degree. I know wanting these things won’t make them happen. I must work hard and remain committed to the goal. I work out four mornings each week with a personal trainer to get stronger and faster; I study hard and manage my studies to ensure that I’m always prepared for tests and assignments; and, I give 100% in everything I do. I would be an asset to any volleyball program, and I believe I could make an immediate impact as a player and teammate.
