Personal Statement

My name is Michelle (my friends call me Miska) Legatova. My family moved to the United States from Slovakia. I am 17-year-old Senior at Newton North High School, in Newtonville, MA. I am a starter/captain on the Newton North Varsity team this past Fall (Massachusetts Girls Volleyball Coaches Association Division I All State team, Bay State Conference Award).

I play for Smash U18 Open team which is 2017 New England Champion.  I am an outside hitter and I have number 13.

I  have received an invitation to participate at the USA Volleyball High Performance National Training Program in New Orleans from July 5th to July  9th. I also am very honored to be invited to play for the NERVA High Performance team at the High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale, FL from July 18th to July 22nd. This was my second year as a captain at the High Performance Championships. This year my team won 6 out of 8 games. Great Experience!

My goal is to study Computer Engineering.

From November 2014 to May 2016, I played on the U18 Hardrock Black Open team as an outside hitter. I wore number 13 and was a starter, despite being the youngest athlete on the team. Our team finished as the top New England team in last year’s Mizuno Boston Open tournament. It was great to play the teams from Texas, Florida, Ohio and more. We placed second at the Great Nor'Easter Tournament in Albany, NY and 31st at the North Eastern Qualifier USA in Philadelphia. I was chosen to represent the Southern Region at the Granite State Games and our team won the entire tournament. I was privileged to have Mr. Lloyd Sheehan (Director of Hardrock Volleyball Clulb) as a coach. He is the person who mentored me and helped instill a passion and love for volleyball in me :)

I also received the privilege to play for the NERVA HP team (captain and starter). At the 2016 High Performance Championship in Fort Lauderdale, FL, we finished 12th in the Youth International bracket (loved playing against teams like Dominican Republic, Arizona, USA HP, California).

Over the Summers I play tons of beach volleyball. I compete at 18U, 22U, Open, co-ed and open, AA beach volleyball through VolleyAmerica, New Hampshire Volleyball club, New England Beach Volleyball and SpikeU tournaments. In August, 2016, I qualified to play at the EVP® World Championships at Paradise Ocean Club in Hampton, VA, and finished in third place in 18U bracket.

I have two older sisters who also played volleyball. I spent many weekends at their games and I absolutely loved the sport! Over the years I have played Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, Skiing and Track, but volleyball is certainly my top priority. I could not wait until I was 8 years old so I could start to play for a club:)

Volleyball is my passion! I take every possible chance to play this sport. School, club, my parents’ adult leagues, beach volleyball, grass volleyball and more. I am excited to play at the intercollegiate level where I can play competitive volleyball while obtaining a great education!

As you review your evaluation, please keep in mind the purpose and objective of the evaluations. This is a feedback tool illustrating your current level of performance and gives you recommendations for areas of focus for improvement to take your game to the next level. Coaches are charged with scoring players openly and honestly in an effort to give athletes the tools necessary to improve. The goal of USA Volleyball High Performance is to identify and train future Olympic prospects. The common objective between you and USA Volleyball is your improvement and success. Evaluations are based on comparisons with other participants in the program in which you participated. Please note that the skills listed are broken down by the particular USA Volleyball cues used in the program. Please use this as a guideline for what you should work on personally, as this is essentially a reminder of what was taught is your program. Below you will find a listing of each skill performed during the camp and your comparative score. The scale is as follows: 5 - Excellent 4 - Very Good 3 - Good 2 - Adequate 1 - Needs Training Thank you for being a part of Team USA. Athletes like you help make USA Volleyball a success. ClientLogo LEGATOVA, Michelle USA Volleyball High Performance National Team Program Athlete Evaluation Passing Overall Score: 5- Skill Emphasis FACE THE SERVER - ANGLE THE ARMS ARMS STRAIGHT BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER SHUFFLE FOOTWORK TRACK BALL WITH PLATFORM PASS AND FREEZE Passing Comments Track the ball early with your platform and fight to keep your body behind the ball, if possible. Great at taking aggressive swings, but work on mixing in off speed shots and tips. ClientLogo LEGATOVA, Michelle USA Volleyball High Performance National Team Program Athlete Evaluation Setting Overall Score: 4- Skill Emphasis SQUARE TO TARGET THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN HAND POSITION ELBOWS WIDE EXTEND ELBOWS AND FREEZE RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT FOOTWORK JUMP SET Setting Comments Be aggressive and deliberate about setting out-of-system balls to an available hitter. Displayed good potential to continue training at a high level. Would like to see more talk and display confidence vocally. ClientLogo LEGATOVA, Michelle USA Volleyball High Performance National Team Program Athlete Evaluation Physiology Score Emphasis 5 Overall Conditioning 5 Upper Body Strength 5 Lower Body Strength 5 Court Speed Physiology Comments You have a good athletic frame upon which to develop; keep working hard! You are strong in your upper and lower body- continue to work on your strength and conditioning to maximize your potential. ClientLogo LEGATOVA, Michelle USA Volleyball High Performance National Team Program Athlete Evaluation Outside Hitter Score Position Emphasis 4+ Defensive Ability 5- Blocking Ability 5 Ability To Terminate 5 Transition To Attack 4+ Offensive Range 5+ Out Of System Attack 4+ Service Receive Ability Position Comments Such an explosive and dynamic athlete! Attacking footwork is aggressive and efficiently builds momentum, but is less efficient/accurate when setting location isn't great. You're fast enough, wait the extra half second to be sure those last two steps get you to the set where you can let your swing do the rest. Jump spin is far above average for age group, though it will important to continue to develop float serve as well. More serve receive reps with a focus on being still and balanced on contact. ClientLogo LEGATOVA, Michelle USA Volleyball High Performance National Team Program Athlete Evaluation It was a blast watching all the dynamic plays you made in every session. You are very explosive, and paired with your aggressiveness you are an exciting, dynamic player! It will be important to become more fluent at reading sets and keeping the same impactful momentum to both accurate and inaccurate sets, as well as out of system sets. I absolutely encourage you to challenge yourself (and your setter) to push the tempo whenever possible on both pins. You have the athleticism and speed to be successful, just focus on loading early and letting your arm fly while the set in still in front of your hitting arm. You have a well-developed platform, and a good understanding of angles. Next is to again focus on and enhance your ability to read (see the line) of the serve, so you can remain balanced and still, make a more fluid and deliberate move directly to the ball to pass. Your competency with a solid mechanical skillset also allows for greater attention to development of intangible facets of success (i.e. communication, leadership, decision-making, court presence etc). I encourage you to challenge your capabilities in that realm as much as your physical skills. I have no doubt your future in the sport is very bright, and I look forward to the next time I get to see you play or work with you!
