Personal Statement
I have played volleyball in New Zealand for the past five years, and whilst initially I was clumsy due to my height, I loved the sport and devoted all of my time to becoming the best player I could be. This year my goal of representing my country in volleyball was realized when I was selected in the New Zealand Under 19 volleyball Junior Womens team. We traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to compete at the 2013 High Performance Championships and the experience both on and off the court was incredible. I was hugely impressed by the level of volleyball in America and would love to have the opportunity to both study and play in the American environment.
As well as my love for volleyball, I have always dreamed of becoming an Aerospace Engineer. I am passionate about design and innovation but I also thrive on mathematics and science. I am fascinated by the science and design of aircraft and rockets and I am equally drawn to careers that call for problem solving and analytical thinking. Aerospace engineering is not offered in New Zealand, so the option of playing volleyball at a collegiate level in the US has never looked more appealing!
I strive to be an all rounded person, and whilst volleyball is my passion, I have managed to balance my sporting life effectively, and maintained a high academic record in New Zealand. In 2012 (equivalent of my junior high school year) I was in the top 5% of students academically. I also play Baritone Saxophone in my high school's Big Band, Saxophone Ensemble and Symphonic Band. I volunteer as a local fire-fighter and at my church's creche program. In my current, final year at high school I have been elected as a prefect, a house captain, a huge honor.
I would love the opportunity to prove myself in the US both academically and as a member of a collegiate volleyball team. I am extremely coachable, hard working, competitive and a quick learner. I am keen to adapt to new ideas and I will be an asset to have on the team.
