I grew up in West Virginia where I began playing soccer at the age of four. When I moved to Virginia at the age of ten, I made the decision to play at the competitive travel level. I began playing as a wing and then transitioned into a defensive midfielder position. During this time, I was also playing on several basketball teams which eventually included an AAU team. Due to my basketball history, my U14 travel coach asked me to try playing goalie when our goalie was not available. In my first game, I was able to come up with some big saves. My coach helped line up additional goal keeping training after that and I moved into the keeper position on my travel and high school teams. My trainings included adding Cross-fit workouts, private keeper trainings, group trainings by my club, and ODP training when I was selected for my district team. Currently, I am playing on the Richmond Kickers travel team and I am the captain of my high school varsity team.
One benefit of being a field player first is my confidence with the ball at my feet. I enjoy using my footwork and passing skills during games. Having a new defensive line this past season has challenged me to develop my 1 V 1 skills. The two teams I play for are very different in strengths and styles of play which helped me to be versatile and to use my leadership skills on the field.
After high school, I want to get a social work degree. My interest in social work has grown through working with at-risk children in inner-cities during mission trips. I have had several experiences coaching and leading sports camps for the kids and want to help them reach their goals in life. I also work at my church in the children’s programs with children who have been adopted or are in foster care. I hope to make a difference in the lives of children in these circumstances. My goal is to continue playing soccer which I love while getting my degree.
