My name is Darryl Mayo and I am a Sr. at Buckeye Valley high school. I live in Ostrander, Ohio with my father, mother, brother and 2 sisters. I have played sports since I was 5 years old starting off with martial arts, tee ball and flag football. I have played football every year since I was 5 years old and also played baseball and wrestled up to my Sophomore year in high school. I have been a top contributor in every sport I have played since I began playing in elementary school. I love playing in every sport that I have participated in, but football has always been my favorite by far. I love the game, enjoy the team aspect of football and the relationships you develop with your team mates. I enjoy working hard and the challenge football presents. Football is a very demanding and tough sport and a team goes through extremely hard work together (in season and off season) and I view my team mates as my brothers.
I have always wanted to play college football ever since I can remember and like many kids, I dreamed of playing in the NFL. My desire to play college football has never changed. My primary goal's right now are to focus very hard on my grades my Sr year (I realize they haven't been the best and I am committed to improving that), have a very strong Sr season and attend college and play football. I think any coach I have ever had in any sport will tell interested coaches that the thing that separates me from other recruits is my commitment to the sport, my work ethic, my character and my integrity. There are many things I see high school kids getting involved with socially that can take them down the wrong path. Those things have never been and never will be things I am involved with or interested in. I am a co-captain of my football team and I feel my team mates voted me to be captain because of my dedication to the sport and the team, my work ethic, my ability and my leadership. I always do my best to lead everyone down the right path, have them focus on what is important in life and tell them to simply do what is right and make good decisions, on and off the field. I think it is a blessing to be able to play the game I love with my team mates and making bad life decisions is something I don't and will never have time for. I know I will make mistakes in my life, everyone does, but I am not going to make the typical mistakes I see many make that are in my control. I feel confident my current and former coaches would say that I am an overall athlete and a difference maker on the team, as well as a leader. I'm sure there have been better overall athletes on some teams that I have been on, but one thing I am positive of, is that not one person has ever outworked me. I know other guys are working hard as well and that just pushes me to improve even more. I want to be the best at what I do and I will never give less than 100% in practice, in a game or training in the off season. I know I can always get better and I work hard physically and mentally to improve every day. My goal is to reach my full potential and I committed to doing so. As I mentioned, I am also committed to giving that same commitment and dedication in the classroom. I have definitely had my struggles with my grades, but I know how important it is to focus on my school work. I have decided to study Business Management and Entrepreneurship in college and am very excited to get started in that journey. I'm currently doing well in all my classes and will continue to do so. My plan this year is to get more help from teachers in study hall and after school. I will also go to additional tutoring sessions if I need to do so. I will honestly say that my struggles in classes previously were due to allowing myself to get behind when I didn't understand something and not asking for the help I needed to early on. I also work several nights per week and weekends and workout 5 days per week, so I learning to better balance my schedule and put school work first.
I am confident that I would represent any college and their football program very well. I have been and will always be a respectful person that knows the importance of a person's character and integrity. I feel very strongly that a person't value's, moral's, character and integrity are the most important attributes about them. Being and athlete and playing college football are definitely very important goals I have set for myself and I can't put into words how much I want to accomplish those goals, but what is even more important to me is the type of person I am and I will never let anything get in the way of being a person that has a strong integrity and character.
I hope that coaches will consider me to be a member of their school and football program. That consideration would be an honor to me and I would not let them down academically or as an athlete. My primary positions have been defensive end (since I was 5 years old) and long-snapper, but I have literally played almost every position on the field. My goal is to be a long snapper for a college an also contribute in any other position I am needed to play. I am confident that my abilities qualify me to play at the next level and I still have a lot of room to grow and I look forward to doing so.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement.
Sincerely,
Darryl Mayo III
